What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build and follow routines for sharing texts and drafts with classmates. They listen closely, respond respectfully, give useful feedback, and decide how to apply comments to revisions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students follow agreed norms, share drafts clearly, and listen without interrupting. They give specific, respectful feedback and explain which suggestions they will use or decline.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat feedback as proofreading, vague praise, or personal criticism. They may interrupt, defend every choice, or ignore suggestions instead of asking questions and deciding what to revise.
How to Assess It
- After a two-minute partner share, collect an exit slip: name one idea you heard, give one specific response, and state how you would use received feedback.

Ways to Teach It
Sort classroom scenario cards into helpful, harmful, and unclear behaviors, then turn the helpful choices into five posted workshop norms.
Write and discuss: What feedback helps you revise, and what feedback makes revision harder?
Play Feedback Match by pairing sample comments with the draft passages they address, then rewrite vague comments to make them specific.
Run an editorial meeting where students pitch short pieces, take notes on peer responses, and choose one revision before publication.
