What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students help set simple rules for reading and writing together. They discuss books, share their writing, listen closely, and exchange kind, useful feedback.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students take turns, look toward the speaker, and respond to what was shared. They share their own writing and give a specific compliment or helpful suggestion.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think listening means staying quiet without paying attention. They may give vague praise, interrupt, or treat feedback as criticism instead of helpful advice.

How to Assess It

Have each student read one sentence from their writing to a partner. Ask the partner to respond with “I noticed…” and one respectful question while you check turn-taking and listening.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs sort picture cards showing helpful and unhelpful workshop behaviors, then glue helpful choices onto a class norms poster.

  2. After a read-aloud, ask, “What did you notice, and what did a classmate say that changed your thinking?”

  3. Play Feedback Match: students draw a response card, then practice giving a compliment, asking a question, or making a kind suggestion.

  4. Invite the school librarian to hear students share class books and model one specific compliment and one respectful question.
