What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explore stories, signs, cards, pictures, and recordings. They notice how pictures, colors, sounds, and word size shape a message, then use those features in their own work.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain how a picture, color, sound, or letter size changes a message. They can create a simple text and choose features that fit its purpose and intended audience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think pictures and colors are only decorations. They may choose large letters, sounds, or images because they like them, not because they fit the message or audience.

How to Assess It

Give students a choice of two signs for a quiet reading area, one with calm colors and a book picture, and one with bright colors and a drum picture. Ask them to circle the better sign and explain why.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs paper, crayons, stickers, and letter cards to create a classroom sign that helps younger students follow one rule.

  2. Show two birthday invitations with different pictures and colors, then ask, “Who might each invitation be for, and what makes you think that?”

  3. Play Feature Match by having students match picture, color, sound, and letter-size cards to messages such as warning, celebration, or bedtime.

  4. Examine a cereal box, bus sign, and family text message, then identify how each uses words and images for its audience.
