What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine how titles, headings, images, fonts, colors, layout, and sound affect what readers notice and feel. They create texts and explain how their choices fit the audience and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can compare two versions of the same message and explain how the design changes the tone or focus. They can create a clear text with features suited to its readers and purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat images, colors, and fonts as decorations instead of choices that shape meaning. They may assume bigger or brighter is always better. They may also choose features they like without considering the intended reader.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Turn “Library Night is Thursday at 6:00” into a mini poster for third-grade families, then explain two design choices.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs the same paragraph, paper, and markers, then have them design one serious version and one playful version.

  2. Ask students to compare two book covers and write which audience each cover targets, using specific design evidence.

  3. Play a feature-matching game where students pair audience cards with suitable fonts, images, headings, colors, and layouts.

  4. Examine a school event flyer, then revise one feature to make the details clearer for families.
