What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use letter sounds and known spelling patterns to read common words and names. They learn unexpected spellings, read the words in sentences, and practice until reading is quick and accurate.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students quickly read familiar high-frequency words and names on cards and in simple sentences. They use letter sounds for regular words and remember the unexpected parts of irregular words. They notice and fix mistakes when a sentence does not make sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess a word from its first letter or a picture instead of checking every sound. They may apply regular sound patterns to words such as “said” or “the.” They may not recognize a known word in a new font, sentence, or capitalized form.
How to Assess It
- Show the cards “can,” “like,” “the,” “said,” “Mia,” and “Patel,” then ask the student to read, “Mia Patel said the cat can run.” Note accuracy, speed, and self-corrections.

Ways to Teach It
Have students build “can,” “like,” “the,” and classmates’ names with magnetic letters, then touch each part and read the whole word.
Ask, “Which part of ‘said’ sounds as expected, and which part must we remember?” Students explain and circle each part.
Play word-card memory by matching two copies of each high-frequency word, with students reading every card they turn over.
Use class name cards to take attendance, then have students find and read first and last names on cubbies, folders, or charts.
