What Students Need to Do: Students build a larger bank of words they can recognize and read right away. They read both predictable spellings and tricky spellings accurately in word lists and grade-level passages.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students quickly and accurately read common regular and irregular words without stopping to decode them. They recognize the same words in lists and connected text, then self-correct errors that affect meaning.
Common Misconceptions: Students may try to sound out every word, including words they should recognize quickly. They may also guess from the first letter or misread irregular words by applying regular spelling patterns.
How to Assess It: Give students 10 grade-level sight words, including irregular words, to read alone, then in short sentences. Record accuracy, pauses, and self-corrections.

Lesson moves

Build words with letter tiles, then flash each completed word for students to read without sounding it out.
Ask students to explain how they remember tricky words such as enough, thought, and could.
Play word card snap, where partners read matching sight words aloud before keeping each pair.
Use a school lunch menu and have students highlight, read, and sort familiar words by regular or irregular spelling.
