What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize and read common grade-level words accurately, both alone and within sentences. They use letter sounds and spelling patterns, while remembering unexpected parts of familiar words.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students read familiar grade-level words accurately without sounding out each letter. When a word is unfamiliar, they use spelling patterns and sentence meaning, then correct themselves if the word does not fit.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from the first letter, a picture, or the sentence instead of checking the whole word. They may think tricky words cannot be decoded at all, or value speed more than accuracy and meaning.

How to Assess It

Give each student 10 mixed word cards, then a short passage containing those words. Note accuracy, hesitation, decoding attempts, and whether the student self-corrects errors.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards to sort into decodable and tricky words, then underline regular parts and circle unexpected spellings.

  2. Ask students to write, “How did the spelling, sentence, and meaning help you read this word?”

  3. Play word-card relay: students read a card accurately, use it in a sentence, then place it in the team’s correct pile.

  4. Use a lunch menu or school notice for a high-frequency word hunt, then reread the text smoothly with a partner.
