What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use letter sounds and spelling patterns to read familiar words without long pauses. They learn words with unexpected spellings and recognize them quickly alone and in sentences.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads familiar regular and irregular words quickly, both on cards and in sentences. The student uses letter patterns and sentence meaning, then rereads when a word does not sound right.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from the first letter or picture instead of reading the whole word. They may try to sound out irregular words exactly as spelled or read familiar words slowly each time.

How to Assess It

Show six word cards, including said, have, went, and three regular words, then ask the student to read a sentence containing two of them. Note accuracy, pauses, and self-corrections.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students letter tiles to build, read, and sort words such as cat, said, have, and went by spelling pattern.

  2. Ask students to write one sentence using said and explain which part of the word must be remembered.

  3. Play word-card bingo, requiring students to read each covered word aloud before placing a marker.

  4. Have students find familiar words on classroom signs, lunch menus, or take-home notes, then read each word in its sentence.
