What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read familiar, simple texts aloud in a smooth voice and look through short texts quietly for meaning. They notice when a word sounds wrong or stops making sense, then reread and fix it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student tracks print, reads most known words correctly, groups words into short phrases, and uses punctuation to guide the voice. After reading, the student fixes obvious errors and tells what happened or names a key detail.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think good reading means racing through the words. They may guess from pictures or first letters and keep going when a sentence does not make sense. Some may look quietly at pages without checking meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a familiar three-sentence decodable text. Listen once, prompt a reread after any mismatch, then ask, "What happened in the text?"

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips, word cards, and a pointer; students build each sentence, track it, read it twice, and repair misplaced words.
Read one sentence two ways, choppy and smooth, then ask, "Which reading helped you understand, and what did the reader do?"
Play Echo Reading: read a line with clear phrasing, have students copy it, then switch to quiet rereading and retell a detail.
Post a simple classroom direction, such as "Put books in the bin," and have students read it silently before completing the action.
