What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how definitions, examples, comparisons, facts, and organization shape an explanation. They choose and use techniques that fit a clear audience and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare two explanations and point to the choices that make one more effective. They can revise a passage with definitions, examples, comparisons, facts, or organization suited to its readers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think adding more facts always makes an explanation better. They may name a technique without explaining its effect, or change vocabulary without truly adapting for the audience.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Using the fact "Teens need 8 to 10 hours of sleep," expand "Later starts can help teenagers" for parents with a cause-and-effect explanation. Underline the technique and explain why it suits parents.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a cut-up article to reorder, then label where the writer uses definition, example, comparison, and cause and effect.
Ask students: Which version of a recycling guide works better for new students, and what specific choices make it clearer?
Play Technique Match: students draw audience and purpose cards, then write one sentence using the technique that best fits both.
Have students rewrite a school club announcement as a clear FAQ for families, using headings, definitions, and one concrete example.
