What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students develop an explanation around a clear focus and arrange ideas so readers can follow the connections. They use varied information, such as facts, examples, definitions, and details. They match tone and word choice to a specific audience and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A strong response has a clear focus and an order that makes relationships between ideas easy to follow. The writer combines facts, examples, definitions, or details and maintains a tone suited to the audience and purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without explaining how they connect. They may also use only one type of information, ignore the audience, or confuse formal tone with complicated wording.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Explain to incoming ninth graders how to prepare for a major test. Include an example, one fact, clear transitions, and an appropriate tone.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups paragraph strips with facts, examples, and transitions, then have them arrange the strips into a clear explanation and defend their order.
Ask students to explain the same school rule to a principal and a new student, then compare their choices in tone and detail.
Play Transition Match by having pairs connect idea cards with the transition that best shows cause, contrast, sequence, or example.
Have students create a one-page guide explaining a school process, such as joining a club, for next year's ninth graders.
