What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain a topic by choosing a clear structure and linking each idea to the main focus. They use several kinds of information, such as facts, examples, definitions, and quotations. They adjust word choice and detail for the intended reader and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

A reader can identify the main focus and follow the order of ideas without confusion. The student uses facts, examples, definitions, or quotations purposefully and maintains a tone suited to the audience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list facts without explaining how they connect to the main idea. They may rely on transitions alone to create organization or use the same tone for every audience. Some treat multiple facts from one source as varied information.

How to Assess It

Provide notes about later school start times: one statistic, one expert quotation, and one example. Ask students to write a paragraph for families that connects all three clearly.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sentence strips from a model article; have them arrange the paragraphs, add transition cards, and defend the sequence.

  2. Ask students to explain the same school policy to a principal and a new student, then compare tone and detail choices.

  3. Run an evidence sort relay where teams match statistics, examples, definitions, and quotations to the paragraph each best develops.

  4. Have students create a one page guide explaining a school procedure for incoming families, using headings, varied evidence, and an appropriate tone.
