What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify how informational texts explain ideas through examples, definitions, facts, comparisons, and cause and effect. They trace the organization and judge how well those choices support clarity, emphasis, and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given an article, students can name its main pattern and cite transitions or arranged details as evidence. They can explain why examples, definitions, facts, or comparisons make the explanation more or less effective.

Common Misconceptions

Students may identify a pattern from one transition word without checking how the whole text is arranged. They may name a technique but fail to explain its effect, or assume a text uses only one pattern.

How to Assess It

Give students a short explainer and ask, “Name its main organizational pattern and one expository technique. Cite evidence, then explain how each helps or hinders the reader.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a cut-up article to reassemble, then have them label the pattern and explain how paragraph order guides understanding.

  2. Ask students to compare two introductions and write which one explains the topic more clearly, citing one expository technique.

  3. Play Pattern Sort with short passages labeled sequence, cause and effect, compare and contrast, and problem and solution.

  4. Have students examine a news explainer or product guide and judge how headings, examples, and visuals help its audience.
