What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use nearby definitions, examples, contrasts, and cause-and-effect details to infer a new word or idea. They break words into prefixes, roots, and suffixes, then check that the meaning fits the passage.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can give a sensible meaning, point to exact clues, and explain how a word part helped. The student can revise an initial guess when another clue or reference source shows it does not fit.

Common Misconceptions

Students often grab the nearest familiar word instead of reading the full sentence or paragraph. They may assume a familiar-looking root guarantees the meaning, even when context contradicts it. Some copy a dictionary definition without adjusting it to the word's use or the passage's larger idea.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “The mayor called the plan impractical because it cost twice the city’s budget and could not be completed on time.” Define impractical and explain how im- and the sentence details support your answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs prefix, root, and suffix cards. Students assemble terms, predict meanings, and test each prediction in a sentence.

  2. After reading a shared paragraph, ask students to write which clue best reveals a highlighted word’s meaning and explain why.

  3. Run a context-clue relay where teams infer highlighted words, name the clue type, and earn a point after explaining their evidence.

  4. Have students examine a news article, infer three unfamiliar terms from nearby details and word parts, then verify them with a dictionary.
