What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students work out unfamiliar words and ideas while reading. They use nearby clues, familiar academic terms, roots, prefixes, and suffixes to build and check meanings.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students give a meaning that fits the sentence and explain how they reached it. They cite specific context clues or word parts and can restate an unfamiliar concept accurately.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first dictionary definition instead of the meaning that fits the passage. They may rely on one word part, ignore nearby clues, or mistake an example for the full concept.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “The committee reached a provisional agreement, one that could change after further review.” Define provisional and identify the clue or word part supporting your answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups prefix, root, and suffix cards to build academic words, predict meanings, and test them in sentence strips.

  2. Ask students to define a bold word from a paragraph, then write which two clues best support their definition.

  3. Play a clue-matching game where teams pair unfamiliar words with context sentences, word parts, and accurate meanings.

  4. Have students annotate a school policy or news article, defining three unfamiliar terms and explaining each concept in plain language.
