What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students figure out unfamiliar words and ideas by using nearby sentences, academic language, and meaningful word parts. They explain which clues support their interpretation and check whether it fits the passage.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students give a meaning that fits the passage and point to specific clues that support it. They use word parts accurately and confirm their inference with a reference source when needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a familiar definition that does not fit the sentence. They may overlook prefixes and roots, misread word parts, or treat one context clue as proof.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “Planting trees can mitigate summer heat in cities.” Define “mitigate,” identify two clues, and explain how they support your answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs context-clue cards and prefix, root, and suffix tiles to build and define unfamiliar words from a short passage.

  2. Ask students to write which clue best reveals a highlighted word’s meaning, then compare evidence with a partner.

  3. Play Word Detective Bingo, with squares for synonym clues, contrasts, examples, definitions, prefixes, roots, and suffixes found in grade-level texts.

  4. Have students decode unfamiliar terms from a news article, product directions, or school policy, then explain why accurate meaning matters.
