What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use nearby clues, roots, prefixes, suffixes, and familiar academic terms to infer unfamiliar language. They test each inferred meaning against the whole sentence or passage.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can propose a reasonable meaning and point to context or word parts that support it. The student checks that meaning against the full sentence and revises when the evidence does not fit.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from a word's sound or choose the first dictionary definition they see. They may also treat prefixes and roots as fixed meanings without checking how the word functions in the sentence.

How to Assess It

Give students one paragraph with an unfamiliar academic word. Ask them to define it, underline two supporting clues, and explain one useful word part.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs prefix, root, and suffix cards to build words, predict meanings, then verify each word in a dictionary.

  2. Post one difficult sentence and ask, "Which clue best supports your definition, and why is another possible meaning weaker?"

  3. Run a context clue relay where teams match unfamiliar words to meanings and cite the exact phrase that proves each match.

  4. Have students annotate unfamiliar terms in a college course description or job posting, then explain each term using context and word parts.
