What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use relevant information from texts to answer questions, learn a process, make a choice, or explain an idea. They connect evidence to their purpose instead of simply collecting facts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students locate relevant details, connect information across sources, and explain how the evidence supports a conclusion. They can summarize what they learned or present a clear, supported recommendation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy facts without explaining what those facts show. They may trust the first source they find, ignore conflicting evidence, or select only details that support an initial opinion.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short texts about a school policy. Ask them to recommend a decision, use one fact from each text, and explain their reasoning.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs printed source cards about school start times; they sort evidence by claim, then build a recommendation from three cards.
Ask students to write: Which source changed your thinking, and what specific detail caused the change?
Play Evidence Match: teams pair claims with supporting excerpts and earn a point only when they explain the link.
Have students compare two phone plans using provider terms and customer reviews, then email a justified choice to a family member.
