What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students help set clear norms for reading and writing groups. They discuss texts, share drafts, listen closely, and exchange feedback that can guide revision.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students follow agreed norms without repeated reminders. They refer to the text, share their own work, listen closely, give specific feedback, and explain how they will use it.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think listening means silently waiting for their turn. They may give vague praise, treat feedback as personal criticism, or assume every suggestion must be used.

How to Assess It

After a short writing exchange, ask each student to record one specific strength, one useful question, and one revision they may make based on feedback.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups behavior cards to sort into helpful, unhelpful, and depends, then use their choices to create workshop norms.

  2. Discuss this prompt: What makes feedback useful, respectful, and specific enough to guide a writer's next step?

  3. Run a feedback relay where students rotate drafts, add one strength and one question, then writers choose a revision.

  4. Compare the class workshop to an editorial team, then assign writer, reader, editor, and discussion leader roles for a short publication task.
