What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose reading and writing strategies that fit a specific text, task, and purpose. They explain why a strategy helped and try another when it did not.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students independently choose strategies such as annotating, questioning, outlining, or using a mentor text. They can show how a strategy helped and change approaches when needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may believe one strategy, such as highlighting, works for every task. They may use a strategy mechanically, mark too much text, or quit without checking whether it helped.

How to Assess It

Give students a dense paragraph and a writing prompt. Ask them to show one reading strategy and one planning strategy, then explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups strategy cards and a short article, then have them sort the cards by usefulness before, during, or after reading.

  2. Ask students to write: Which strategy helped with yesterday's text, what did it reveal, and when would you use it again?

  3. Run a matching game where teams pair reading or writing problems with useful strategies and defend each match.

  4. Compare how a journalist plans an article and how a reader checks claims, using a local news story as the shared text.
