What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a useful reading or writing strategy based on their goal and the text. They explain their choice, use it, and switch strategies when needed.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given an unfamiliar text or writing task, students independently choose tools such as annotating, summarizing, outlining, or revising. They can show how each tool improved their understanding or draft.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the same strategy for every task or treat annotation as copying sentences. They may name a strategy without applying it, or continue using one that is not helping.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article and ask: “Choose one strategy to understand the article and one to plan a response. Explain how each helped.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Match reading and writing task cards to strategy cards, then test one match using a short passage or prompt.

  2. Ask students to write: “Which strategy helps you most when a text becomes confusing, and when should you try something else?”

  3. In pairs, draw a task card and choose a strategy, earning a point for using it well or defending a better choice.

  4. Have students create a class announcement, using a planning tool and revision checklist to make the message clear for its real audience.
