What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose reading and writing strategies based on the text, purpose, and difficulty. They monitor whether a strategy works and switch approaches when needed.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select strategies that fit the text, purpose, and challenge. They can annotate, question, summarize, organize, draft, and revise, then explain when each move helped.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the same strategy for every task, even when it does not fit. They may confuse heavy highlighting with close reading or treat a first draft as finished writing.

How to Assess It

Give students a challenging paragraph and ask them to choose one reading strategy, record their thinking, and write a two-sentence interpretation. Have them name why their strategy fit the passage.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place a dense paragraph at each station, then have students use sticky notes to annotate, summarize, question, and map its ideas.

  2. Ask students to write which reading or writing strategy helped most on a recent assignment and cite one specific result.

  3. Play Strategy Match by giving teams task cards and strategy cards, then awarding points for well-explained matches.

  4. Have students analyze a workplace email, then revise it using planning, organization, and editing strategies for a specific audience.
