What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students build a set of reading and writing strategies they can use for different tasks. They choose, apply, and adjust strategies based on the text, purpose, and audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students independently choose a useful strategy, such as questioning, summarizing, rereading, outlining, or revising. They can explain why it fits the task and switch strategies when the first choice does not work.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the same strategy for every text, even when it does not help. They may also name a strategy, such as annotating or outlining, without explaining how it improved their reading or writing.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph and ask: “Choose one strategy to help you understand this paragraph, use it, then explain why you chose it.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up strategy stations with sticky notes, highlighters, graphic organizers, and sentence strips, then have students test each tool on one text.

  2. Ask students to write: “Which reading or writing strategy helps you most, when does it help, and when might another strategy work better?”

  3. Play Strategy Match by giving teams task cards and strategy cards, then awarding points for a clear match and explanation.

  4. Have students plan a school announcement by choosing tools for gathering details, organizing ideas, drafting, checking clarity, and revising for the audience.
