What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students separate a word’s dictionary meaning from the feelings or judgments it suggests. They compare related words and use sentence context to explain differences in tone and meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the literal meaning of a word and explain its positive, negative, or neutral associations. They use context to compare related words and explain why an author chose one over another.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat synonyms such as “slim” and “skinny” as interchangeable because their dictionary meanings overlap. They may also label connotations as simply positive or negative without using context to explain the effect.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence, “The reporter was persistent,” then replace “persistent” with “stubborn.” Ask them to explain what stays the same and what changes.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cards with words like “confident,” “proud,” and “arrogant,” then have them arrange each set from positive to negative.

  2. Ask students to compare “The crowd was youthful” and “The crowd was immature,” then write how each word shapes the reader’s view.

  3. Play a synonym swap game where teams replace one word in a sentence and explain how the tone changes.

  4. Compare wording in two advertisements for the same product, then identify which words create trust, excitement, or doubt.
