What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare words with similar dictionary meanings and identify their emotional, social, or cultural associations. They explain how a writer’s word choice shapes tone and reader response.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given words such as confident, proud, and arrogant, students can describe the different impressions each creates. They can select the best word for a context and explain its effect on tone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat synonyms as interchangeable because their dictionary definitions overlap. They may assume a word is always positive or negative, ignoring context, audience, and cultural associations.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: In “The candidate was _____ during the debate,” choose confident, proud, or arrogant, then explain how each option changes the candidate’s image.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups word cards such as thrifty, frugal, and stingy; have them place each on a positive-to-negative continuum and justify placements.
Discuss how youthful and childish create different impressions of the same person, then write one sentence using each word.
Play Connotation Match: teams pair neutral situations with the synonym that creates an assigned tone, then earn points by explaining the effect.
Compare two headlines about the same event and mark words that make the people involved seem admirable, foolish, threatening, or sympathetic.
