What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine words with similar basic meanings and identify the feelings, judgments, or associations each carries. They explain how a writer’s word choice changes tone and meaning in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students compare closely related words and describe differences in tone, intensity, and emotional effect. They choose the best word for a context and support that choice with specific associations.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat synonyms as interchangeable because their dictionary definitions overlap. They may label a word simply positive or negative without explaining how context, tone, or intensity shapes its effect.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Explain why “The reporter was persistent” creates a different impression than “The reporter was pushy.” Cite one detail from each word’s associations.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups synonym cards such as slim, thin, and scrawny to sort by tone, intensity, and likely context.
Ask students to explain how replacing confident with arrogant changes a character description and the reader’s judgment.
Play a synonym swap game where teams revise one sentence to sound approving, neutral, or critical without changing its basic meaning.
Compare word choices in two advertisements for the same product, then identify how each creates a different impression.
