What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify both the literal meaning and the feelings or associations connected to a word or phrase. They compare related words and explain how context changes meaning and tone.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately explain a word’s literal meaning and its suggested attitude in context. They compare related words and cite details that show how each choice changes tone or meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat denotation and connotation as interchangeable. They may label a word positive or negative without using context, or assume synonyms create the same tone.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Read, “Maya was persistent during the debate.” Explain the literal meaning and implied attitude, then describe the effect of replacing persistent with pushy.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort printed word cards such as slim, thin, skinny, and scrawny by shared denotation, then rank them from positive to negative connotation.

  2. Discuss how replacing determined with stubborn changes a character description, then write which word better fits the passage and why.

  3. Play Context Clues Relay: teams match highlighted words to denotations and connotations, then cite the phrase that supports each choice.

  4. Compare wording in two headlines about the same event and explain how loaded words shape readers’ reactions.
