What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify a word’s literal definition and the feelings or associations it carries in a passage. They compare related words and explain how context shapes meaning and tone.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can distinguish a word’s dictionary meaning from its emotional or cultural associations. They use context evidence to explain why one related word fits better than another.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat synonyms as interchangeable because their dictionary definitions are similar. They may also assume a word always carries the same connotation or confuse connotation with the passage’s overall tone.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: In “The committee scrutinized the proposal,” replace “scrutinized” with “examined.” Explain what stays the same and what changes.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups synonym cards such as thin, slender, skinny, and scrawny, then have them sort the words by positive, neutral, or negative associations.

  2. Ask students to compare “confident” and “arrogant” in two sentences, then write which word better fits each speaker’s purpose and why.

  3. Play a context swap game where teams replace one highlighted word with a synonym, then explain how the replacement changes tone or meaning.

  4. Collect headlines or advertisements using loaded words, and have students rewrite each with neutral language before discussing the effect.
