What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students vary sentence length, structure, and order to create a deliberate effect. They revise sentences without causing confusing shifts in verb tense, aspect, or mood.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can combine, split, invert, or reorder sentences to control pace and emphasis. Their verbs remain consistent unless a clear change in time, aspect, or mood is intended.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think variety means making every sentence longer or adding random punctuation. They may also shift between past and present tense or change verb mood without a clear reason.
How to Assess It
- Give students three choppy sentences in past tense. Ask them to combine and reshape the sentences for emphasis while keeping the tense, aspect, and mood consistent.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips to combine in three ways, then label how each version changes pace, focus, or emphasis.
Ask students to revise a flat paragraph, then explain which sentence change creates the strongest effect and why.
Run a revision relay where teams fix verb shifts and vary sentence openings without changing the paragraph’s meaning.
Have students rewrite a school announcement for an email, a speech, and a poster while keeping verb forms consistent.
