What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students revise sentence structure to create a clear style or effect. They vary sentence length and arrangement while keeping verb tense, aspect, and mood logically consistent.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can combine, split, reorder, and expand sentences to control pace, emphasis, and tone. Verb forms remain consistent unless a deliberate shift in time or meaning requires a change.

Common Misconceptions

Students often vary syntax by creating fragments, run-ons, or awkward sentence combinations. They may shift tense accidentally or assume every change in tense, aspect, or mood is incorrect, even when meaning requires it.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Revise “Nia opened the email. She reads it twice. She waits for this answer for months.” into two polished sentences with varied syntax and consistent past tense. Underline one verb phrase and label its tense, aspect, and mood.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips from a choppy paragraph, then have them combine and rearrange the strips while keeping verb forms consistent.

  2. Ask students to revise one sentence three ways, then explain which version sounds most urgent, reflective, or formal.

  3. Run a syntax relay where teams repair tense shifts and vary sentence openings in a short paragraph without changing its meaning.

  4. Compare sentences from a news report and social media post, then rewrite each for the other audience while preserving verb consistency.
