What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine, split, reorder, and expand sentences to control pace, emphasis, and clarity. They keep verb tense, aspect, and mood consistent unless meaning requires a deliberate shift.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students vary sentence openings, lengths, and structures to shape pace and emphasis. They can repair an unnecessary shift in tense, aspect, or mood and explain how their revision changes the effect.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think sentence variety means adding random openings or making every sentence longer. They often shift from past to present without reason or mix indicative, conditional, and imperative moods. They may also treat every aspect change as an error, even when timing supports it.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Revise “Jon had studied all week, walks into the room, and would answer every question confidently” into two sentences with consistent verbs. Begin one sentence with a dependent clause and circle the words you want emphasized.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs color-coded sentence strips from a flat paragraph; have them combine and reorder strips, then mark every verb for consistency.
Ask, “How does changing ‘The door opened slowly’ to ‘Slowly, the door opened’ alter emphasis and pace?” Students defend one version.
Run a revision relay where teams repair tense, aspect, or mood shifts, then earn a point for an effective syntax change.
Compare a news alert, product warning, and campaign speech; students rewrite one message for its audience while keeping verb choices consistent.
