What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine, split, reorder, and reshape clauses to control rhythm, emphasis, and tone. They keep verb forms consistent unless a shift in time or meaning is deliberate.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can revise a flat paragraph so sentence lengths and structures support its purpose. Verb forms stay consistent, and any shift in time, certainty, or possibility has a clear reason.

Common Misconceptions

Students often vary syntax by making every sentence longer or adding extra clauses. They may shift from past to present, mix completed and ongoing actions, or switch between statements and hypotheticals without a clear purpose.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Revise this passage using two different sentence patterns and consistent verbs: “I walked into the room. I saw the letter. I feel nervous. I might open it.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs clause strips from a dull paragraph, then have them combine and reorder the strips to create suspense without changing verb time.

  2. Ask students to revise “The decision was announced” three ways, then explain which version sounds most forceful and why.

  3. Run a revision relay where teams fix one tense, aspect, or mood error and vary one sentence pattern before passing the paragraph.

  4. Compare opening sentences from a news report and a college essay, then rewrite each for the other audience while preserving verb logic.
