What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use a print or digital style guide to resolve difficult questions about sentence structure, word choice, capitalization, punctuation, and formatting. They support revisions by pointing to a specific rule or example.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students locate the right entry efficiently and apply it accurately to a difficult sentence. They can explain each revision with specific evidence from the selected guide.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat spell-check or personal preference as a final authority. They may assume all guides give the same advice or make a correction without locating the relevant rule.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with three challenging errors. Ask them to correct each one and cite the page, section, or entry that supports each change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a style guide and an error-filled paragraph; have them flag, correct, and label five grammar, usage, or punctuation problems.

  2. Ask students to defend one revision in writing, naming the guide rule and explaining why the original wording or punctuation fails.

  3. Run a style-guide relay where teams locate rules for semicolons, possessives, numbers, and quotations, then apply each rule to a sentence.

  4. Compare a school announcement with a news article, then revise each for the style rules expected by its audience and publication.
