What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a print or digital style guide to resolve questions about grammar, word choice, punctuation, capitalization, numbers, and formatting. They find the relevant entry, apply the rule, and explain why the revision fits the chosen guide.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a tricky sentence, students can locate the right section without being told where to look. They can make a defensible edit, cite the entry, and recognize when another guide may set a different convention.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a style guide like a dictionary and search only for individual words. They may assume every guide gives identical advice, copy an example without reading its conditions, or accept a grammar checker's suggestion without verification.
How to Assess It
- Give students a one-page guide excerpt covering titles, dates, and numbers, plus this sentence: “The article Why Teens Read appeared on monday, Sept. 9, and quoted 12 students.” Ask them to revise it and label each change with the matching heading.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sticky tabs and a print style guide; have them mark entries for capitalization, numerals, abbreviations, quotations, and source titles.
Show two edited versions of a school announcement; students write which version follows the assigned guide and cite two entries.
Play Style Guide Relay: teams draw an editing card, find the relevant entry, revise the sentence, and earn a point for evidence.
Have students edit the morning announcements for consistent dates, titles, numbers, and abbreviations using the publication guide.
