What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect a text to facts and ideas they already know or find through research. They explain how those connections confirm, question, or build beyond the author’s claims.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student identifies a specific claim, uses accurate information from a credible source, and explains the connection. The explanation shows how the outside information strengthens, weakens, or adds to the claim.

Common Misconceptions

Students may insert a fact or quotation without explaining how it changes their reading. They may treat disagreement as proof the author is wrong or rely on an unreliable source.

How to Assess It

Give students a claim from the day’s text and one related source excerpt. Ask them to explain in three sentences whether the excerpt confirms, questions, or expands the claim.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a printed article, sticky notes, and three source cards; they attach each card beside a claim and label its effect.

  2. Ask students to write: Which outside fact most changes your view of the author’s claim, and why?

  3. Play Claim Match: teams pair text claims with evidence cards, then earn points by explaining whether each match confirms, questions, or expands.

  4. Compare a product advertisement with a consumer report, then explain how the report confirms, questions, or adds to the advertisement’s message.
