What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use what they already know and what they find through research to examine a text's ideas. They decide whether outside evidence supports, challenges, or extends those ideas.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify a text's main idea or claim, then connect it to relevant knowledge or research. They explain clearly how the evidence supports, challenges, or adds to the text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize the text instead of analyzing its ideas. They may rely only on personal opinions, cite unrelated facts, or assume research must agree with the author.

How to Assess It

Give students a short passage and one related research fact. Ask: Does the fact support, challenge, or extend the passage, and why?

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a passage and research fact cards to sort into supports, challenges, extends, or unrelated.

  2. Ask students to write: What outside knowledge changes or deepens your understanding of the author's idea?

  3. Play Evidence Match by having teams pair claims with research facts and defend each connection for a point.

  4. Compare a news article about screen time with a pediatric health report, then note where the sources agree or differ.
