What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect close reading with relevant prior knowledge and credible research. They use those connections to confirm, question, or build on ideas presented in a text.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify a specific idea in a text and connect it to relevant knowledge or research. They explain clearly whether that evidence confirms, questions, or adds to the author’s thinking.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a personal belief as evidence, cite unrelated facts, or assume analysis must disagree with the author. Some summarize the text without explaining how outside evidence supports, questions, or adds to its ideas.

How to Assess It

Give students a short claim and one research excerpt. Ask them to explain in three sentences whether the research supports, challenges, or extends the claim, using evidence from both.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students sort evidence cards into supports, challenges, and extends columns, then match each card to a claim from a shared article.

  2. Write: “What does the author get right, miss, or leave unfinished?” Use the text, research, and prior knowledge in your response.

  3. In Evidence Relay, teams read a claim card, choose a research card, and explain whether it supports, challenges, or extends the claim.

  4. Compare a local news article with city data, then write whether the data confirms, questions, or adds to the article’s message.
