What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use information from written, visual, or spoken texts to understand a concept or sequence. They then create a clear explanation that organizes ideas, steps, and supporting details for a specific audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can interpret an article, diagram, or demonstration and identify the main concept or process. They can create an accurate explanation with logical order, clear transitions, relevant details, and defined terms.

Common Misconceptions

Students may summarize facts without explaining how ideas or steps connect. They may copy source wording, omit needed steps, or assume readers already know key terms.

How to Assess It

Give students a labeled diagram of the water cycle. Ask them to write a five-sentence explanation that uses the diagram’s details and shows how each stage leads to the next.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs build a paper structure from written directions, mark confusing steps, then revise the directions for another pair.

  2. Compare two explanations of the same process and write which one is clearer, citing two specific choices made by the writer.

  3. Give teams scrambled process cards to sequence, then award points for explaining why each step belongs in that position.

  4. Create a one-page guide that teaches a new student how to complete a common school task, including steps, reasons, and visuals.
