What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use relationships among words and parts of sentences to work out unfamiliar or multiple meanings. They explain how a synonym, contrast, comparison, or nearby clause supports their interpretation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select a meaning that fits the whole sentence or passage. They point to specific words or clauses and explain how the relationship supports that meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students often choose the most familiar definition, even when it does not fit the sentence. They may spot a nearby clue but misidentify whether it shows similarity, contrast, comparison, or explanation.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “The critic’s praise was qualified, since she admired the acting but faulted the plot.” Define “qualified” and explain which words clarify its meaning.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs of word and clause cards for students to sort as synonym, antonym, analogy, or explanatory clue, then defend each choice.

  2. Ask students to explain how changing one clue in a sentence changes the meaning of an underlined word.

  3. Run a context clue relay where teams identify a word’s meaning, mark the clue, and name the relationship for each sentence.

  4. Have students examine headlines or product reviews for multiple-meaning words, then explain how context prevents misunderstanding.
