What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use nearby words, phrases, and sentence parts to work out unfamiliar meanings. They compare possible meanings and explain which one fits the context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select a meaning that fits the full sentence or passage. They point to a synonym, contrast, example, analogy, or clause that supports their choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the most familiar definition even when it does not fit the sentence. They may treat synonyms as exact matches or miss contrast words such as but, unlike, and however.
How to Assess It
- Give students this sentence: “The room was sparse, with only a chair and a lamp.” Ask: “What does sparse mean, and which words prove it?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips and definition cards, then have them match each word to its meaning and underline the supporting clue.
Ask students to explain how the meaning of “bright” changes in three sentences, using evidence from each sentence.
Play a context clue relay where teams identify the clue type, choose a meaning, and justify it before earning a point.
Have students collect multiple-meaning words from menus, ads, or headlines and rewrite each phrase to make the intended meaning clear.
