What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare words and examine nearby phrases or clauses to figure out meaning. They use synonyms, antonyms, analogies, and context clues to choose between possible meanings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select the meaning that fits the passage and point to words or clauses that support it. They accurately label relationships such as synonym, antonym, and analogy.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a familiar meaning without checking the sentence. They may confuse synonyms with antonyms or focus on shared words instead of the relationship shown in an analogy.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Mina felt a draft, so she closed the window.” Ask students to define “draft,” underline the clue, and explain how it supports their answer.

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort word cards and sentence strips into synonym, antonym, analogy, and context-clue groups, then label the evidence.
Ask students to explain how changing one clause in a sentence can change the meaning of a multiple-meaning word.
Play a context-clue relay where teams match unknown words to definitions and circle the clue that supports each match.
Collect headlines, menus, or advertisements with multiple-meaning words, then have students explain which meaning fits each real-world example.
