What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use details, patterns, and context to work out ideas the author does not state directly. They follow those ideas as the text develops, revising them and explaining surface and deeper meanings with evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can infer a character’s motive, the tone, or a larger message, then point to exact words that support it. When new evidence appears, the student confirms, narrows, or changes the inference and explains why.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often guess from personal experience without tying the idea to a specific clue. They may treat an early inference as fact, or name a theme without showing how details build that meaning.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Reveal two parts of a short passage in sequence. After each part, students write an inference, cite one clue, and explain any revision.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs printed clue cards from a short story and have them sort each under character motive, mood, or theme, then justify placements.
Discuss one repeated object from the class text: What does it mean literally, and what larger idea might it represent?
Play Inference Relay: teams read three revealed sentences, record an inference after each, and earn points for revisions supported by new clues.
Compare two restaurant reviews, then identify each writer’s unstated attitude and underline the words that reveal it.
