What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students infer ideas that are not directly stated, including character motives, themes, and symbolic meanings. They track those ideas across a text and support them with details and reasoning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students distinguish literal details from implied character, thematic, and symbolic meanings. They cite precise evidence, explain their reasoning, and revise an inference when later details challenge it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a guess or summary as an inference. They may assign one fixed meaning to a symbol, select only supporting details, or ignore evidence that challenges an early interpretation.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage and ask for one character inference and one thematic inference, each supported by a quoted detail and reasoning.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups color-coded cards with textual details, then have them build chains connecting evidence to character, thematic, and symbolic inferences.
Ask students to write: What deeper meaning does the ending suggest, and which two details make that interpretation reasonable?
Run an inference ladder relay where teams add evidence, reasoning, and a deeper interpretation, then revise when given a conflicting detail.
Analyze an advertisement for its direct message, implied audience assumptions, and symbolic choices, using specific words and images as evidence.
