What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read for ideas the author states directly and ideas the author suggests. They form conclusions about characters, events, themes, or figurative language, then track and support them with text details.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain both obvious and deeper meanings in a text. They cite relevant details, connect each detail to their thinking, and revise an inference when new evidence appears.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call any guess an inference, even when no text clue supports it. They may keep an early idea after later details challenge it. They may also confuse a theme with a plot summary.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with an unstated character motive. Ask them to name the motive, cite two clues, and explain how each clue supports it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sticky notes to mark a clue, write an inference, and revise it after reading the next page of a short story.

  2. Discuss what a character means but does not say, then cite two details that support the interpretation.

  3. Play Inference Relay: teams match clue cards to inference cards, then remove any match they cannot defend with the text.

  4. Examine an advertisement and identify its stated message, implied promise, target audience, and visual evidence.
