What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen closely during presentations, pose relevant questions, and respond clearly when audience members question them. They use follow-up questions to clarify ideas, add detail, or check understanding.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student asks questions connected to the speaker’s main point and answers audience questions with relevant details. The student listens, responds respectfully, and uses follow-up questions when clarification is needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may ask off-topic questions or give one-word answers that do not explain their thinking. Some treat audience dialogue like a quiz instead of a chance to clarify or extend ideas.

How to Assess It

In pairs, have each student explain a claim for 60 seconds. The partner asks one question, and the speaker gives a direct answer and asks a relevant follow-up.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups topic cards and sticky notes; after each two-minute talk, audience members post one question and speakers answer two.

  2. Ask students to write: Which audience question would help this speaker explain the idea more clearly, and why?

  3. Play Question Relay: one student presents a claim, classmates ask connected questions, and the presenter answers without repeating a previous response.

  4. Simulate a school board meeting where students present a proposal, answer audience concerns, and ask which change would gain support.
