What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students give a short presentation, then invite and respond to audience questions. They also pose questions that check understanding, gather reactions, or clarify an audience comment.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student asks clear, relevant questions rather than vague or simple yes or no questions. The student answers directly, adds useful details, and requests clarification when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the exchange as a quiz where only the audience asks questions. They may answer a different question, repeat the presentation, or give up when a question is unclear.
How to Assess It
- Have each student give a 60-second explanation of a familiar topic. Require one question for the audience and answers to two audience questions, then check clarity and relevance.

Ways to Teach It
Place a common object in a bag; pairs reveal it, explain an unusual use, then ask listeners for questions and answer them.
After a two-minute talk, listeners write one open question and one clarification question, then speakers choose and answer both.
Run a press conference game where one student presents a claim and classmates earn points for relevant questions and direct answers.
Role-play a student council meeting about a school event, with presenters fielding concerns and asking attendees which plan they support.
