What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine how a text’s format and genre shape which ideas, facts, examples, and details appear. They use that knowledge when analyzing texts and planning their own.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain why a writer includes certain ideas or facts in one format but not another. They can also choose suitable content when planning their own text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat mode and genre as the same thing. They may also assume the same details belong in every text, regardless of audience, purpose, or format.

How to Assess It

Give students the topic of a school event. Ask them to list three details for a news article and three for a video diary, then explain one difference.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups detail cards about one event, then have them sort the details into a news article, podcast, infographic, or personal narrative.

  2. Ask students: How would the same storm be presented differently in a weather report and a survivor’s diary?

  3. Play Genre Switch by giving pairs a topic and having them revise a content list for a new genre and mode.

  4. Have students plan a school lunch announcement as a poster, principal’s email, and student podcast, choosing different details for each.
