What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide how a text’s mode and genre shape the ideas, facts, examples, and details an author includes. They compare texts on one topic and choose fitting content when creating their own.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain why a news report uses verified facts while a personal narrative uses memories and sensory details. The student can select or leave out information to match a chosen mode and genre.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat genre as the topic or assume mode only means print versus digital. They may include every fact they find, even when it does not fit the chosen text.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: For a school lunch topic, list two details for a personal narrative and two for a news report. Explain one difference.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups detail cards about a storm to sort into a news report, personal narrative, and safety poster, then require one justification.

  2. Compare a news brief and poem about the same event, then write which ideas each includes and why.

  3. Play Genre Switch: Students draw a topic and genre card, then race to list three details that fit both.

  4. Compare a cafeteria menu, nutrition label, and food review, then mark what information each includes and leaves out.
