What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine how print, audio, video, and visual formats shape the information a text includes. They also choose ideas and evidence that fit genres such as editorials, reports, narratives, and proposals.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain why a podcast, infographic, news report, and editorial include different details. They select evidence and ideas that fit a chosen mode and genre.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat mode and genre as the same thing. They may also assume every fact belongs in every text, rather than selecting details that fit the form, audience, and purpose.

How to Assess It

Give students six facts about a school phone policy. Ask them to choose details for a 30-second audio report and a written editorial, then justify one difference.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups fact cards about one event, then have them sort details for a news article, infographic, podcast, and personal narrative.

  2. Ask students to explain which details from a community event belong in a news report but not in a personal reflection, and why.

  3. Play Genre Switch by having pairs draw a mode card and genre card, then choose three fitting details from a shared fact list.

  4. Compare a company press release, video advertisement, and product review to identify which facts each includes, emphasizes, or leaves out.
