What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how sentence structure affects clarity, emphasis, and meaning. They condense and combine related ideas while choosing word order, clauses, and punctuation that fit the purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students combine choppy or repetitive sentences into clear, concise sentences without losing key information. They can explain how word order, clauses, and punctuation affect emphasis and meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think longer sentences always sound better or that combining sentences only means adding “and.” They may create run-ons, misplace modifiers, or remove details that change the meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students three related sentences. Ask them to combine the ideas clearly, underline the main idea, and explain one syntax choice.
